SG1 Storage Rings/Synchrotrons

Goals / Mission

LEAPS Strategy Group SG1 shall provide strategic support to LEAPS and strengthen the coordinated efforts of LEAPS Members, Associates and Partners.

The group tasks are:

  • to support the GA in its strategic work such as the roadmap process
  • to provide feedback to the WGs on the research opportunities that have been identified by the scientific community and which can be enabled by innovative WG projects
  • to deal with any other issues identified by the GA which requires the specific expertise of the particular SG

Outcomes / Achievements

Major achievements & current work: 2022-2024

Major achievements

  • Feedback and inputs to the WGs on (via RDB):
    • new research opportunities identified by the group,
    • prioritization of topics for EU partnerships,
    • strategic access.
  • “LEAPS Meets” conference series (QM&QT, LS):
    • contribution to the topic identification (2022 – “Quantum Technology”, 2023 – “Life Sciences” – 2025 “Energy”)
    • concept definition for each of the topics

Aymeric Robert, Klauss Attenkofer and Amina TALEB are member of the next LEAPS Meets Conference 2025 – Scientific Programme Committee (SPC)

  • Knowledge sharing:
    • web seminars on the feedback from the new DLSR sources and projects:
      • Harald Reicherton feedback from the new ESRF-EBS, Nov 12th 2021
      • feedback from MAXIV, SLS 2.0 and ELETTRA 2.0 to come
    • Proposal developments:
      • SMART-FIT proposal submission at HORIZON-INFRA-2022-TECH-01 call (April 2022)
      • Contribution to OPTIBEAMS proposal submission at HORIZON-INFRA-2024-TECH-01 call (April 2024). SG1 proposed to address the Energy and Energy transformation challenge and participated in the pool of experts for final ranking of short listed ideas and participated to the proposal construction.
      • SG1 aims for a more collaborative project among LEAPS
  • Support Horizon-INFRA-2023-SERV-01-01 efforts (coordinated by LEAPS partners):
    • RI services for renewable energy technologies and systems,
    • RI services for innovative applications of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
  • SG1 provided contributions to the Block Grant Document task force for the Madrid meeting end of August 2023

Ongoing Projects and Priorities

  • Dissemination of LEAPS activities under the workforce and user community:
    • develop guidelines to disseminate goals, achievements and
plans of LEAPS to a larger audience including users and workforce,
    • examples may be:
      • Provide materials explaining how LEAPS could benefit people’s jobs,
      • Present and integrate LEAPS activity programs in the Facility Users meetings.
    • Major high impact activities to be addressed:
      • revisit classification of science areas,
      • Make a survey of beamtime use for science challenges
      • analyzing impact of currently developed Data policies/data handling on future scientific output (especially big data user community) and developing advice to the RI
      • develop concepts to foster exchange between LEAPS and the international community.
    • Development of LEAPS contingency plan as response to increased cost and fragile supply chains:
      • LEAPS has to face electricity cost increase, Helium supply restrictions, raw materials availability and costs, delivery delays.
      • Help coordinate efforts, provide lobbying for additional resources, provide priority guidelines for  strategic access
    • Participation to EU project: SUNSTONE
